Experience Quincy Mine!

Quincy Mine is nestled in the quiet town of Hancock, Michigan. The Quincy Mining Company was one of the largest producers of copper within this area’s world renowned mining district. Operating underground from 1846 to 1945, the Quincy Mine produced nearly one billion pounds of copper that fueled the industrialization of our nation.

Now a Heritage Site of Keweenaw National Historical Park and a National Historic Landmark, the industrial landscape is open to the public for discovery and unique learning experiences. Guided interpretive tours provide guests an opportunity to go over 360 feet underground, surrounded by areas worked by Quincy’s miners in the 1860s. Self-guided landscape tours are available free-of-charge for those short on time.

Discover the history that created companies, communities, and a unique Keweenaw culture!

We visited during winter break and loved it. My sons, 17 and 13, enjoyed the tour and we learned a lot about the hardship of miners and how the copper businesses exploited labor. Our tour guide Brook did a phenomenal job keeping our attention and informing us of the history.

My family really enjoyed this tour. We did it in December, so the first half took place in the big pump house, and then we all drove by car through Hancock to a short hike through the snow to the mine entrance. I would advise to dress warmer than you think you need to, (layers and a neck scarf) and wear waterproof boots, as the ground inside mine is wet with puddles. You are required to wear hard hats, so if you have a warm winter hat, make sure it is thin enough to fit underneath.

Excellent interactive winter tour with family. We took this tour about 10 years ago and needed a refresher this past weekend (November 29th). We started the tour in the hoist building and then drove our vehicles down to the trail leading to the mine entrance. While there was snow/ice on the trail, it was a nice walk in our hiking boots. Then we walked about 2000 feet into the mine learning lots of cool facts. We were able to see what mine life was like in the late 1800s and 1900s when Copper mining in the Keweenaw boomed. Our guide was great with answering questions and providing a lot of opportunities to keep us engaged. We then drove back up to the gift shop to purchase some souvenirs.

We had a great time with our family touring the grounds and tourist areas of the mine. The guided tour was very informative; ask lots of questions! I wish we could really see what they were looking for still in the mine walls!
After hearing the mine is 9000 feet deep, it is almost disappointing to only get to go 300 feet deep (though everything else is flooded). It is hard to imagine the true scale of what was happening.
Cool place. Worth a visit.

Great experience! Our tour guide was very educational! He was very interactive with the group and had a great personality. Above ground was very interesting and underground was eye opening. Tour takes about 2 1/2 hours total. Wearing a thick hoodie or a jacket is ideal because it’s around 40ish degrees down there and dark. The gift shop is nice BUT the mineral museum has better options for rocks/minerals.

Well worth the trip
They offer much more than we could do but we walked the grounds. Many ruins that were soo interesting. Just us, no other people. It was free. Easy to walk.
Train cars, buildings, all kinds of old mining things used back in the day for the process. My husband took more pictures than I did, I was just enjoying the area.
Great gift shop where we purchased a great flash lite for hunting up perlite stones. (good price, cheaper than Amazon, same flashlite)
I would go back…

5/5 stars would totally recommend! Our tour guide was Julia and she was just a gem! She was so sweet and had so much knowledge in speaking along the tour! I have lived in Michigan my whole life and had no idea that all this history lies within copper harbor! This tour is great for all ages! Very interesting and informational! Very good price for all you get to learn and see!

We visited the Quincy Mine this summer with our family, the seize of the group was about twelve visitors. We had an amazing experience. Our guide Tim made the history of the mine come alive with fascinating stories and insights. The tram ride and underground tour were impressive and gave a real sense of the miners’ world.

Absolutely fabulous experience. Our tour guide really made us feel what it would be like to be a miner back in the day. A must do if you are in the area.
