Summary:

For generations, the silhouette of Quincy’s No. 2 Shafthouse has stood as a landmark above our community – a symbol of our area’s heritage, the laborers who built it, and the ingenuity they possessed. Beneath its shadow lies a much larger landscape shaped by industry and nature alike; a landscape that, in turn, has shaped our community and the identity we each share.

As part of its 65th Anniversary celebration, the Quincy Mine Hoist Association is inviting artists of all ages and experience levels to submit work for a community exhibition celebrating the land, history, and enduring spirit of the Copper Country. Selected works will be exhibited throughout the site’s 1894 Hoist House where they will be seen by over 20,000 visitors from across the globe.

This exhibition seeks artwork that reflects and interprets:

  • The physical mining landscape
  • The architecture and machinery of the industry
  • Stories of labor and familial heritage
  • The emotional resonance of place
  • The relationships between community and industry

Artists are encouraged to explore both historical and contemporary perspectives. Submissions of any media and genre will be accepted – we welcome diverse interpretations of what it means to live, work, and create in the shadow of the Shafthouse.

Regulations:

  • By submitting an entry, the artist consents to said piece of artwork being displayed for the duration of the exhibit in an unconventional “gallery” setting (i.e. environmental and accessibility factors such as temperature, humidity, lighting, and physical barriers are not monitored). If these factors may harm the artwork due to its media, or if the artist is uncomfortable with these conditions, arrangements to display a high-quality facsimile or print may be pre-arranged.
  • While all appropriate precautions and care will be taken and the designated display area will be regularly staffed, the Quincy Mine Hoist Association is not liable for any damage, deterioration, theft, or loss that may occur during transport, installation, exhibition, or removal. Artists retain full responsibility for their work and are encouraged to insure their work if desired.
  • This exhibition celebrates works created through direct artistic processes and craftsmanship. Any submitted works assumed or proven to be substantially assisted by artificial intelligence platforms, including text-to-image or generative image software, will not be accepted. In the case that an accepted work is later determined to be AI generated, the Quincy Mine Hoist Association reserves the right to remove the work from the exhibit at any time.
